Ella Yu held office as the International Senator from Winter 2024 to Spring 2025 and was A.S. Global Gaucho Commission’s Policy Director in Spring 2025.
During her time as an International Senator, Ella Yu collaborated with the A.S. Global Gaucho Commission on projects that tackled food security issues among international students. In Spring 2025, Yu transitioned into GGC’s Policy Director to better assist the commission’s efforts.
Yu regularly attended GGC meetings as its liaison to the A.S. Senate. She updated the commission on her work with the Senate and gave her input on project proposals by other Board members. She also brought attention to important challenges faced by international students to the Senate.
As an international student herself, Yu deeply resonated with GGC’s mission to foster global understanding among the UC Santa Barbara undergraduate student body. “I wanted to contribute to building a stronger, more inclusive community where students from all backgrounds feel seen, supported, and connected,” says Yu.
“I envision GGC as a leading force in shaping UCSB’s commitment to cultural inclusivity and student well-being.”

Yu’s favorite memory of working with GGC was watching the continuation of the Finals Boost Station every quarter. She was a frequent face at GGC tabling sessions, and was eager to communicate with the students she served. “Seeing students leave with a smile and a bit more confidence for their exams reminded me of the power of small acts of care,” Yu recollects.
Yu’s time at GGC taught her the importance of collaboration and listening to students’ needs. She was also able to gain insight into how policy and programming can address student challenges while working as a Senator. Hearing from students who felt genuinely supported by her efforts was rewarding to Yu.
With her extended experience uplifting international students, Yu encourages future GGC members to stay curious and compassionate for what they do. “Every project, no matter how small it may seem,” she comments, “has the power to make a difference. Don’t be afraid to advocate for new ideas—you never know who you might inspire or support along the way.”
As an ending note to her journey with GGC, Yu shares, “I hope GGC continues to expand its impact, forging deeper collaborations with more campus organizations and global communities. I envision GGC as a leading force in shaping UCSB’s commitment to cultural inclusivity and student well-being.”
